Astronomers say a huge asteroid is headed for a close encounter with Earth on Halloween  morning.   And they say it'll be our closest encounter with an asteroid since 2006.

The scientific name for the asteroid is "2015 TB145".  Amazingly it was just spotted by astronomers on Oct. 10th.  And this thing is scary big.  It's approximately 984 to 1,542 feet in diameter - basically as wide as the Empire State Building is tall.

How close will it come to Earth?  It’s expected to come within 310,000 miles - a little bit more than the distance between the Earth and the Moon.  Flying by at 78,000 mph it'll make its closest encounter at 11:14 a.m. EST on Oct. 31st.

NASA says it won't  be until August 2027 when another object comes that close to Earth.
