Today, August 28, is not only a big day for country star birthdays (Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes and Jake Owen), but it also has been a good day for top country songs as well.

Although some of the songs were recorded on this date and went to number one later, others were at the top on this date.

"Stand By Your Man" was recorded by Tammy Wynette on this date in 1968. Although a bit controversial among women's rights groups, the song remains one of the most covered and requested songs of all time.

George Strait's "Fool Hearted Memory" gained number one status on this date in 1982. As a huge fan of any George Strait song, I may be partial. But this has to be one of the best country songs of all time.

Tracy Lawrence went to number one on the country charts on this date in 1993 with the hit "Can't Break It To My Heart." Tracy just released a new album and continues to light up stages all over America.
