Dale Mussen

I've been doing this radio thing for over 35 years now. I've been a part of the Breakfast Club morning show since 1986. Since I was a kid, I've loved to read. I read the newspaper each day nearly cover to cover – usually not the classifieds though. I get a lot of ideas for my Daily Data segment just by reading the paper. I’m a lifelong Bills and Sabres fan, and I've been a regular in the press box of both teams since 1979 -- but I'm still waiting for one of them to win a championship! Four cracks at it for the Bills and two for the Sabres, and they came up short. I was born and raised in the Buffalo area. I went to school at Niagara University, and since Clay went to Canisius, we get to raz each other twice each year when the Eagles and Griffs meet to play basketball. I have a large collection of records. I'm one of the few that still has the old vinyl, including a lot of old 45s in their original sleeves. Some kids probably have no idea what I'm talking about at this point. My favorite things to do in my spare time are bike riding and fixing things around the house, and each fall, I officiate high school football games.

Buffalo’s Historical California Connection

At the corner of Fargo Avenue and Jersey Street on Buffalo’s west side you’ll find an historical marker on the spot where the Fargo mansion once stood. It took up the entire block of land and among the visitors were Presidents Grant and Cleveland and author Mark Twain.

The Country’s Oldest St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Buffalo always has two St. Patrick’s Day parades – the one in the old First Ward on the Saturday closest to St. Patrick’s Day and then the one down Delaware Avenue the following day.

This country’s oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parade is in New York City.

Edwards Wins At Bristol

It took more than eight hours to complete because of two rain delays, but they finished under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway and in the end it was Carl Edwards taking the checkered flag for his first victory since Richmond last September and third career win at Bristol.

Sabres Nosedive Continues

Chalk up a sixth straight loss for the Buffalo Sabres, but they may have found a goaltender.  6-foot-5 Nathan Lieuwen was called up to the Sabres on an emergency basis when Michael Neuvirth was unable to go, then in the second period Jonas Enroth was forced to leave the game with an injury, so Lieuwen made his NHL debut and did well.

National Potato Chip Day

March 14th is National Potato Chip Day. There’s no official government proclamation – it’s probably a creation of snack food companies to celebrate the nation’s favorite snack food.

Americans eat 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips every year. Regular or plain potato chips are the most popular, but some of the other top sellers are barbeque, sour cream and onion, salt and vinegar and ranch.

Salt Is Big Business In WNY

With this year’s brutal winter Buffalo area towns and villages are using much more rock salt than they have in the last couple of winters combined. Many are three or four times over what they had budgeted for salt, but they have no choice. Luckily the largest salt mine in the United States is about an hour’s drive away.

Electronic Era Presidential Firsts

It was just 8 days after he was inaugurated that President Franklin Roosevelt gave his first national radio address, speaking directly from the White House. The U.S. was at the lowest point of the Great Depression with between 25 and 33 percent of Americans unemployed. The country was worried and Roosevelt went on the radio to assure them he was prepared to lead the country back to prosperity.

Another Sabres Snoozer

I sometimes think it would be more exciting to step outside First Niagara Center and watch the construction workers putting up the Harbor Center than watch the Buffalo Sabres stumble thru game after game.  At least the guys working on the Harbor Center are getting something accomplished, getting something done and have something to show for their work.  The only thing the Sabres are getting accomplished is adding to the loss column.

The Winter Storm Of Storms

With up to 12 inches of snow possible coming our way over the next 24 hours to 36 hours it's just a reminder that the month of March can bring some pretty severe winter storms.  And probably none was worse than the blizzard of 1888 that killed more than 400 people and dumped as much as 55 inches of snow in some areas. New York City ground to a halt in the face of huge snow drifts and strong winds.
