Ah, the summer. The time of the year where the box office is ruled by superhero movies, science fiction extravaganzas and, uh, slightly quirky cancer weepies. What? For reasons that will baffle some people, 'The Fault in Our Stars' effortlessly took the number one spot at the box office this weekend, gliding past its bigger, more expensive and more ferocious competition and making it look easy.
Bill Murray only gets cooler with age. Sure, the legendary actor may have gotten pickier with his choice of roles in in recent years, but he's made up for his reduced screen time by being the Most Awesome Guy On The Planet, appearing in random places and spreading oddball joy wherever he goes. The latest incident involves a bachelor party in Charleston, South Carolina, which Murray crashed to deliver a truly incredible speech.
Everyone expected 'Godzilla' to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend, but few people saw it doing business that rivals 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.' 'Godzilla' didn't just win the box office this weekend, it conquered it, proving that after all of these years, the king of the monsters is still a massive draw.
Movie theaters tickets have gotten steadily more expensive over the years, but this takes the proverbial cake: a Canadian theater chain has announced a new program where moviegoers will have to pay a surcharge to sit in the middle seats of each row. You'll soon have to pay an additional $2-$3 to sit in the "prime" seats, ensuring that you'll have the (supposed) best view of the screen and that you'll be isolated from all of the riffraff in the cheap seats.
The saga of Harry Potter may have come to a definitive end with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,' but his mysterious wizarding world will live on! We already knew that original Potter Author J.K. Rowling would be making her screenwriting debut with upcoming spinoff film 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,' but now we know when we'll be able to see the movie!
Big names popping by 'SNL' for brief appearances stopped being surprising a long time ago, but there's something really special about Barbara Walters stopping by Weekend Update. Maybe it's because Walters (with her 50 year television career) is a much bigger deal than a flavor-of-the-minute celebrity. Maybe it's because she's obviously a really good sport about how 'SNL' has mocked her over the years. In any case, it's an oddly sweet and weird scene in a season of the celebrated variety program that's pulled out all of the stops when it comes to being sweet and weird.
As expected, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' opened the summer movie season in style, overcoming mixed reviews to dominate the top 10 and cause every other film's weekend gross to tumble. Coming weeks will see if it can do the business of the other films in the franchise, but this is a strong start to what looks to be a jam-packed summer.
After nearly a month on top of the box office, 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' got taken down by a bunch of funny ladies. 'The Other Woman' effortlessly took the top spot, sending Marvel's latest superhero adventure to the number two slot and making the other new releases of the week look bad.
The 'Twilight' films may have reached their (seemingly) definitive conclusion back in 2012 with 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2,' but the series lives on as a massive piece of modern popular culture. We can't talk about vampires and werewolves ever again without someone making an Edward or Jacob joke. Supernatural romance is bigger than it has ever been before. And then there's the fact that the franchise's success continues to inspire countless imitators.
We only remind you of this because yes, it's still okay to make fun of the 'Twilight' movies in 2014 and the latest hilarious video from the folks at Bad Lip Reading does just that.
When you follow movie news as closely as we do, you learn to roll your eyes at terrible ideas and move on. There's not point in getting worked up when a truly awful project is announced because getting worked up over every bad idea that comes out of Hollywood would mean getting worked up every single day of the year and we just don't have the energy to deal with getting worked up so often (whew).
But, today is a special day. Today, they've gone and announced movies based on Disneyland's 'It's a Small World' ride and popular Easter candy, Peeps Marshmallow Treats. Today, they have gone too far.
'Frozen' is a juggernaut. In addition to winning two Academy Awards and becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the movie has seemingly struck a chord with an entire generation. You can't go out in public these days without hearing an adorable kid belt out a hilariously mangled version of "Let It Go." It's already a cultural touchstone. Children are going to be raised on this movie.
And, shockingly, Disney is not talking at all about 'Frozen 2.'
There is no easy way to finish 'Fast and Furious 7' without being somewhat insensitive toward the tragic death of series lead Paul Walker, but the cast and crew found the best and most noble solution imaginable. We already knew that Walker's brothers were going to join the production to help finish the film as body doubles, but they officially arrived on set and it looks like this plan is going to work.
