Brantley Gilbert is in no rush to release new music. In a recent interview, the "Stone Cold Sober" singer says while he has written more than three dozen songs for his follow-up to 2014's Just as I Am, he is taking his time on putting the album together and waiting for a "gut feeling" that he doesn't quite have yet.

"There’s still a couple gaps we need to fill," he tells Billboard. "I think we’ve got a record with the songs we have, but I want an album. I don’t want to release a CD; I want to release the real deal, so we’re just gonna take our time. We’re just being patient right now and diligent at the same time, writing every chance I get and writing with a purpose, and when I know I’ve got it, it’ll come out."

Gilbert has been writing songs with some of Nashville's finest songwriters, including Brian Davis, Ben Hayslip, Rhett Akins, Casey Beathard, Justin Weaver and Ashley Gorley, among others.

"It’s been a really, really, really cool year — a lot of different songs, ideas, a lot of different melodies, and I kinda throw my thing on top of ‘em and see what it comes out sounding like," Gilbert explains. "It’s been a lot of fun. And we’re going to keep going and branch out more and see if I can trump what I already have."

Gilbert kicked off his Blackout Tour Jan. 28 in Saginaw, Mich., and he says he wanted to begin the tour "in the heart of the heartland."

“I wanted to go where the people work hard, throw down and really needed the party... Saginaw is all that, and then some," he says in a press release. "I looked in those faces — and I knew, these people mean business."
