The players have been saying there’s a new atmosphere around the Buffalo Bills these days, but it didn’t really much show on the field until Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The Bills were able to overcome penalties and turnovers to score the winning touchdown with two seconds to play for a 24-23 win.

Rookie quarterback E-J Manuel had a couple of crucial second half turnovers that the Panthers converted into field goals, but in the final two minutes he drove the Bills 80 yards, including six pass completions and a scramble to the two yard line that set up the winning touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson.

It kind of reminded me of Jim Kelly’s winning touchdown in the 1989 season opener against Miami. Some were saying it was a lot like Doug Flutie’s game winner against Jacksonville in 1998.

Either way it’s the start of a new era for the Bills and head coach Doug Marrone was proud.

The Bills got some huge contributions. C-J Spiller with 103 yards on 16 carries and 26 more yards on four catches. Heading into that final two minute drive he says the whole team was confident they could finish the job.

Stevie Johnson with 10 catches for 111 yards and the winning touchdown. And defensively the Bills finished with six team sacks with Mario Williams setting a new Bills and personal record with four and a half.  He gives the new coaching staff and his teammates with helping him get thru some personal tough times.

The Bills improve to 1-1. They travel to New York to play the Jets next Sunday.
