Will he be the franchise quarterback the Buffalo Bills have been looking for?  Selecting E J Manuel in the first round certainly says a lot.  The Bills selected the first quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.  They were hoping he'd be there with the 16th overall pick and Manuel says he was hoping it would be the Bills who selected him.

Manuel will be one of the biggest quarterbacks ever to play for the Bills.  Nearly 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds, he's the most accurate passer in the history of Florida State football.  He ranks third all-time in pass completions, yards passing and yards in total offense.

He met with the Bills earlier this month and was impressed with Offensive Coordinater Nate Hackett's plans for the offense he wants to run.  Of all the teams he met with, Manuel thought the Bills would best suit his talents.

And there's already a connection between Manuel and the Bills.  He's close with former Bills star Bruce Smith.  Both are from Virginia Beach, Virginia and Smith is Manuel's godfather.  Bruce has already told him about the city and the team's glory years.

Manuel was overcome with emotion when he spoke to Deion Sanders on the NFL Network

The Bills traded their 8th overall pick to St. Louis and picked up two additional picks in the process.  The Bills swapped their Number 8 pick for the Rams' Number 16 plus the Rams' second round pick, 46th overall and another pick in the seventh round.  The Bills started with only six picks in the draft and now will have eight.  Good move by Buddy Nix.

The second and third rounds of the draft are on Friday, with the fourth thru seventh rounds on Saturday.
