Boston, New York City, Washington....those are probably the cities that would come to mind right away when considering places that would be great places to celebrate the 4th of July.  But Buffalo?

A recent press release by the personal finance website WalletHub ranks Buffalo the 10th best place in the country to celebrate the 4th of July.  And that was out of 100 cities surveyed.

How did they arrive at their conclusions?  They ranked each city in five categories -

  • 4th of July Celebrations
  • Affordability
  • Attractions and Activities
  • Safety and Accessibility
  • Weather

The two best categories for Buffalo were 4th of July Celebrations and Safety and Accessibility.  Buffalo was ranked 7th best in both categories.

Among the things they measured in the Celebrations category were the number of celebrations and festivals in the area, the local interest in fireworks displays, the duration of the displays and online searches for information about scheduled celebrations.

Safety and Accessibility took into account walkability, access to public transportation, traffic congestion, crime and traffic fatalities.  Buffalo received very good marks in those areas.

Surprisingly, Buffalo's worst marks were in Affordability which had me scratching my head.  Compared to the rest of the country Buffalo finished 79th out of 100 in the cost of food, beer and wine and hotel costs.  What?  Buffalo?  That can't be right.

You might be surprised that the bottom five cities for 4th of July weather were all in Florida -

  • St. Petersburg
  • Orlando
  • Tampa
  • Hialeah
  • Miami
