It took eight games and an overtime shootout to do it, but the Sabres finally have their first win of the season.

Marcus Foligno scored with two minutes to play in the third period to force overtime, then a shootout, and that's where the Sabres won it. Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis each scored in the shootout, while Ryan Miller stopped two of the three attempts against him, and the Sabres emerged with a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders.

Ennis and Vanek also scored in the second period -- Vanek's goal coming on the power play. And late in the third, when it appeared the Sabres could be headed to their eighth straight loss at the beginning of the season, Foligno scored his first of the season on a screen shot to force overtime.

The Sabres are back home Thursday night to host the Vancouver Canucks.
