Rookie Phil Varone scored both Buffalo goals against Carolina [Getty Images][/caption]It doesn't show yet in the standings, but the Buffalo Sabres seem destined to prove without a doubt they are the worst team in the National Hockey League.  After a surge in late November and early December they've been in downward spiral ever since.  Their 5-2 loss in Carolina Thursday night was their sixth straight loss, their 10th in the last 11 games and their ninth straight loss on the road.

Name it - goal scoring, defense, power play, penalty kill, add in lack of effort - the Sabres have been just horrible.  A couple of back to back penalties did them in against the Hurricanes.  It started the 'Canes on a stretch of three goals in less than two minutes and essentially the game was over.

On the positive side, rookie Phil Varrone playing in just his second game scored both Buffalo goals.

The Sabres wind up the road trip Friday night at Tampa Bay.
