Buffalo Tied to Titanic Disaster

Buffalo’s own Edward Austin Kent was a Yale Graduate, an architect and kin to the owners of the Flint & Kent store on Main Street was aboard the ill-fated ship.
He was 58 when he went down on the Titanic, at the end of his career, on a farewell tour of Europe.
When an iceberg hit the ship, he realized the situation, and went down and sought out Mrs. Helen Churchill Candee, and helped her up onto a life boat. She survived he didn’t – women and children first!
Kent’s body was returned to Buffalo, and laid to rest at Forest lawn Cemetery, where his tomb stone reads that he died at sea on the Titanic, and bears the inscription, ” Greater love hath no man, than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
