This is exciting! Tashi the rhinos are about to be a mom again! This morning the Buffalo Zoo announced there will be a new rhino at the zoo soon because Tashi is pregnant!

Tashi is expected to give birth in Summer 2019 was once again impregnated by artificial insemination. The father is a male rhino named Suru, who lives at Zoo Miami in Miami, FL.

Tashi was the first greater one-horned rhino to be successfully impregnated by artificial incrimination back in 2014. The father was named Jimmy and he had been deceased for ten years before her birth. Tashi gave birth to Monica, who now lives at the  San Diego Zoo.

There are less than 3,500 Indian Rhinos left on this earth, which is why they are listed as an endangered species! In a press release from the Buffalo Zoo,

“It’s another historic event for the Buffalo Zoo, and we’re very hopeful Tashi will carry the pregnancy to term," said Norah Fletchall, President and CEO of the Buffalo Zoo. "Together with our partners, we’re doing all we can to save this critically threatened species.”

You can see Tashi now in her habitat at The Buffalo Zoo. And the announcement is perfect timing because this Saturday is World Rhino Day!  From 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m zoo guests will be able to enjoy keeper talks, themed activities and rhino encounters.

We look forward to following the pregnancy and welcoming a new baby to Buffalo!
