A Virginia calf is getting a second chance at life, courtesy of some good Samaritans.

They took in the five-and-a-half-month-old calf back in the spring after it suffered severe frostbite and lost both of his back hooves. The calf, Hero, had two options -- rehab or the slaughter house. They just wanted to give him "a fair shot in life," so Kitty Martin took Hero to her animal rescue ranch.

A New Jersey man owns a company that makes prosthetic limbs. He heard about the story and went to work on designing and manufacturing a pair of artificial hooves. He donated them free of charge.

Hero took his first steps last Thursday, and it looks like things are going to work out.
