Can I Take A Break From Facebook now?
I think the time has come. Chicago said it, and then Boys II Men backed them up and admitted, "Everybody needs a little time away." It's true. What started off as a fun thing to do and a cool way to keep up with people, has become incredibly depressing and I think I need a break.
Facebook is no longer a way to post things that you're doing or show pictures of places you've been. Instead, it's been a place to voice your opinion. After all, it is your page right? You can say whatever you want on your page.
You sure can...but I'm not sure that you should.
Especially over the last couple weeks, you really get a glimpse of what your "friends" have on their minds. Lately, they're pretty negative. The name calling and insults have gotten worse. I've gotten to the point where I am really just missing pictures of what everyone is eating and babies that really aren't that cute.
What used to be a means by which to get closer to people over the internet has really become a way to tear other people down over their beliefs. It's not fun anymore. It's depressing. And half the "news" on there isn't "news" at all.
So what do I do? Do I cut everyone off and just unfriend everyone that I have a difference of opinion with? Do I unfollow them? Do you just turn away from it all together or deactivate your page?
It's easy to just quit - to just walk away and let negative people be negative. I don't want to be a negative person.
In my line of work, we pride ourselves on being able to connect with people. Facebook used to be a great way to do that. Now though, it feels as if everyone is just shouting at each other and nothing is being heard. That's not a connection.
I never want to close off that opportunity. So I won't. But instead, I'm going to do my best not to contribute to it. Sometimes it's hard to bite my tongue but I'm going to. I'm going to do my best to be positive with what I post. I'm going to try to bring a smile to someone's face instead.
If it makes you feel better to argue, or if it makes you feel better to rant, then by all means...it is YOUR PAGE. Go ahead. But forgive me if I remove you from mine.
