It's an annual event at the Canal Fest of the Tonawandas, and it's all for a good cause.  The Community Missions tent has been busy all week selling small plastic ducks, each of them numbered, and at 3 pm on Saturday they'll all be dropped from the Delaware Street bridge into the Erie Canal in a race to win prizes.

Ducks are $5.00 apiece, or 6 for $25.00, 13 for $50.00 or 30 for $100.00.

Profits from the Canal Fest Duck Race benefit the Community Missions’ Crisis Services Programs, which include the Community Soup Kitchen, Clothes Closet, Food Pantry, and Emergency Housing Shelter.

This year's Duck Race almost didn't happen because of a state law that bans any games of chance on state property, even if it benefits charity.  Since the ducks are dropped into the state-owned Erie Canal, it makes the event illegal.  But an appeal to the governor and the State Gaming Commission was able to find a way to continue the event this year and in the future.
