Most boys his age might have wanted a bike or a rifle, but an 11-year old boy in Tupelo, Mississippi asked his mom for a guitar on his birthday and that’s what he got. Elvis Presley and his mom went to the Tupelo Hardware Store on this date in 1946 and she paid $6.95 for a guitar that changed his life and set him on a course to stardom.

It was only two weeks after becoming the country’s oldest person, Mamie Rearden of Edgefield,Georgia passed away at the age of 114.  She was born in 1898.  She was married for 59 years until her husband died in 1979. She raised 11 children, 10 of them still living.

Where You Can Drive 85

It was on this day in 1974, President Nixon signed a law that set the national speed limit at 55 miles an hour.  Before that it was always up to the states to set speed limits, but with oil prices on the rise after the war between Israel and Arab countries in 1973-74, the U-S began a policy of fuel conservation and rationing including a lower speed limit to force drivers to save on gas.

He always knew there had to be a simple solution to every problem if you just thought about it long enough. He loved to sing with his church choir. And he liked to keep track of all of the songs in his hymnal because the choir director would skip back and forth from the back of the book to the front.
