Facebook or Twitter — Which Is Bigger?

So which is the more popular social media site? Facebook or Twitter? Maybe it’s because it had a headstart, but Facebook has more than double the registered accounts and daily users than Twitter.

As of yesterday’s quarterly earnings report, Facebook has 1.1 billion registered users with 665 million active daily users, up 23 percent from the year before. And Facebook has 751 million mobile users each month, up 54 percent from last year.

Compare that with the numbers from Twitter. Twitter has 500 million accounts with more than 200 million active users.

Facebook had a two year head start over Twitter. Facebook appeared in February of 2004 – had a million users by the end of the year, 5.5 million a year later, 50 million four years later, 100 million five years later.

After a little over six years it reached the half billion level and two years after that Facebook reached a billion.

Twitter began in March of 2006 and its growth has been slower, but steady.

There’s one social networking site that may soon surpass Facebook for registered accounts. It’s also past the one billion user mark. It’s YouTube with four-billion Youtube videos viewed each day.
