Western New Yorkers take our local foods for granted. We can't help it, there is such an abundance that we can't help but become used to having such great food at our finger tips whenever we want it. I here so often from friends and family who have moved away that they really miss true Buffalo chicken wings, or how they can't wait to come home for a visit so they can eat some real pizza.

Here is my list of Buffalo foods that people miss the most when they move out of town.

    Chicken Wings and Pizza

Chicken wings were invented in Buffalo, NY at the Anchor Bar. They have been often imitated but seldom perfected, anywhere but Buffalo. Once considered the scraps of the chicken which were often discarded, this is Buffalo's "premier" treat. Pizza while not being native to Buffalo, is still at it's best here. People who move from the area often times yearn for Bocce Pizza.

    Beef On Weck

This might need a little explanation (for non-Buffalonians) Weck is short for kimmelweck, a Kaiser Roll, with caraway seeds and pretzel salt. Those of us familiar with the Buffalo area may like Anderson's, for their Beef on Weck.

    Sahlen's hotdogs

As many a commercial says "Sahlen's is a Buffalo tradition". Sahlen Packing Company was founded in 1869 in Buffalo, N.Y. Company founder Joseph Sahlen dedicated himself to one guiding principle: only the freshest and highest quality meat products would bear the proud Sahlen name. Today Sahlen's is the name behind the Buffalo area’s favorite hot dogs (and by the way, holiday hams). The company headquarters remains in Buffalo, and is still Sahlen family owned and operated.

    Sponge Candy

Sponge Candy has an inside that tastes like molasses and caramelized sugar. It has what can be described as a very unusual texture crisp at first but then quickly melts in your mouth. The candy is covered with a coating of milk chocolate or dark chocolate and while it is not unique to Buffalo, we do it best.
