A family member said Ford died with family members at her bedside in Palm Springs, California, The New York Times reported.

She overcame an alcohol and pill addiction and helped found the Betty Ford Clinic, one of the best-known rehab centers in the country.

President Barack Obama called Ford a "powerful advocate for women's health and women's rights."

In 1975, Newsweek named Ford Woman of the Year.

Gerald Ford died on December 26, 2006, at the couple's home in Rancho Mirage. He was 93.
