Last night my wife had to work late and it was just me and the kids.  It was a planned "relaxing" night so there was no agenda (my favorite kind of night).  As we flipped through the channels and realized there was nothing on, I thought I would just take a chance on something.  It was the best decision I've made in a long time.

I've had my share of Spongebob Squarepants.  Sometimes I feel that if I have to watch another minute of that show I might consider giving my TV away.  I think we've watched every episode and my kids still seem to want more.

So last night I thought I'd give them a little touch of something that I watched when I was a kid.  I noticed while flipping that the show "Alf" was on one of those retro channels.  I remembered how much I loved it when I was my daughter's age and I thought, "what the heck...maybe they'll like it."

They LOVED it.  They were cracking up laughing at his remarks and asking me questions like crazy.

-Is he a bad alien?

-How did he get there?

-His name is what again?

-What planet is he from?

-He eats cats?

The whole time we were watching I was turning into an 8 year old little boy again.  I was remembering how cool Alf was and how badly I wanted a talking Alf toy.  I remembered how my friends and I would get in trouble at school for repeating some of his wise remarks.  I remembered how they ruined it by making him a Saturday morning cartoon instead of the puppet.

I remembered how my dad had sat in front of the TV with me watching The Lone Ranger and answering all my questions.

-What's the Indian's name again?

-Whose horse is that?

-What's the horses name again?

-Why does Tonto always have to do the hard work?

That's when I realized why my dad loved watching those reruns of that old black and white show.  He was passing on something that he loved to his kid and last night I got it.  There's no feeling that's better than that.  The icing on the cake came this morning when my son woke up and asked if he could watch it again tonight!
