After slamming into North Carolina with high winds, huge waves and torrential rain, Hurricane Irene is headed across Virginia and points north.  An estimated  one million people in Virginia alone are without power and for many it'll be days before the power is back on.

At least 10 people have lost their lives including a 9-year old boy in Newport News, Virginia who was killed when a tree crashed into his bedroom. 

A tornado in Tyrrell County, North Carolina destroyed five homes and damaged many more.  High winds ripped roofs off homes and businesses throughtou the state.  The heavy rain has created flash flooding.

Hundreds of flights across the Northeast have been cancelled.  New York City has ordered masss evacuations of low lying areas and its public transportation system has been shut down as of noon on Saturday.
