New York State officially decided on Sunday to change the age of criminal responsibility in 2017. Some were weary of the new age change, but it passed in the budget and is rising from 16 years old to 18 years old.

In fact, New York State is the second last state to make the change. The only other state that considers 16 year olds adult criminals is North Carolina. So, how much will this affect criminals?

  • About 28,000, 16 and 17 year olds were tried as adults every year in New York State.
  • About 600 children per year 13-15 were processed in adult criminal courts in New York.
