Justin Wilson, one of the most popular drivers in the IndyCar Series, died Monday night after being injured during a race at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania.  Wilson was struck in the head by debris from a one-car crash that happened ahead of him.  Wilson's car then struck an inside wall in Turn One.  Wilson was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he remained in a coma until he died of his injuries.

Wilson made 174 career starts in IndyCar and Champ Car racing.  He had seven career victories including one at Watkins Glen in 2009, eight career poles and finished in the top-five 47 times.

A number of NASCAR drivers tweeted their thoughts -

  • Jeff Gordon: So sad to hear that we lost Justin Wilson today.  Thoughts & prayers to his family and friends.
  • Dale Earnhardt, Jr.: Thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and to the @IndyCar family. #RIPJustinWilson
