Is Your Pet Overweight?
Do you have an overweight pet? I do! My 7-year-old pug Bear (a.k.a. Fatts), unfortunately, is so overweight that he developed diabetes and gets two shots a day for the rest of his short doggy life. Sad, isn't it?
One good thing -- my boy has lost 10 pounds since being diagnosed.
As you can see, obesity isn't just an issue for us humans; it hits our pets, too. According to the latest survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than half of U.S. pets (dogs and cats) weigh much heavier than they should. Fifty-two percent of dogs were found to be overweight, as were 58 percent of cats.
Those numbers account for nearly 80 million pets who are at increased risk for various cancers, diabetes and hypertension.
When studying the cats in this surve,y pool researchers found a lot of Type 2 diabetes cases. With the dogs, the Labs and Goldens were found to be at a higher risk of becoming overweight.
