It's hard to accept for any sports fan knowing that losing is winning.  That's exactly the case with the Buffalo Sabres.  If this season hasn't been miserable enough, the final month and half is going to be a disaster.  It's almost like looking at a bad car wreck and feeling guilty when you do.

One day after the trading deadline deals that gutted the team, the patch-work Sabres held their own against the Tampa Bay Lightning for most of the first period.  But a couple of bad penalties early in the second period put the Lightning on the power play cashing in on a pair of goals.  Game over.

The Sabres didn't mount much of anything the rest of the way and the Lightning cruised to a 3-0 win.  And that's pretty much what you can expect for the final 18 games of the season.  It's all by design so that the Sabres are in the best position to make the first pick in the amateur draft in June.

Two or three seasons from now we can only hope all this "suffering" was worth it.  I keep saying it....it better be.

The Sabres travel to Ottawa on Friday night.
