It'll be an end to an era when Jeff Gordon calls it quits from fulltime NASCAR Sprint Cup racing at the end of the 2015 season.  Gordon made the official announcement to his team at Hendrick Motorsports headquarters on Thursday.

He has 92 Sprint Cup wins, trailing only Richard Petty and David Pearson in career victories.  Among the highlights are three Daytona 500 wins, five victories at the  Brickyard 400 and four Sprint Cup championships.

He says he just can't envision a day when he completely steps away from racing and says he intends to remain heavily involved with the company.  He'll consider selected events down the line, but he won't race in the 2016 Daytona 500.

He's been racing in NASCAR's top division since 1992 and along the way he's raced from the pole 77 times to lead all active drivers and ranks third all-time.  He's gained at least one pole in 22 consecutive seasons.

Gordon is the current Iron Man with 761 straight Sprint Cup starts and in 2009 became the first driver to reach $100-million in career earnings.  He has victories at every NASCAR track except for one: Kansas.

He won four races in 2014 including his most recent one at Dover. He's one class act with the talent to go along with it.  Whether fans like him or not, he'll be missed.
