Following the tragedy of the day before in the Nationwide race, the Daytona 500 finished with a big wreck on the final lap, but the track was clear to the finish line so the race stayed green to the end. Dale Earnhardt, Junior got a shove from Mark Martin to threaten, but it was Jimmie Johnson holding on to win the series biggest race for the second time his career.Junior settled for second place for the third time in the last four years while Mark Martin came in third.

Defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski finished fourth while Ryan Newman came in fifth.

Pole sitter Danica Patrick came in eighth, the highest finish ever for a woman at Daytona.

An early wreck took out two of the favorites to win – Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart. And a real tough run for Carl Edwards involved in his fifth wreck in 30 days at Daytona. He was taken out when Brad Keselowski got tangled up with David Reutimann and Trevor Bayne and it collected Edwards a little further in the pack.

The season continues next week in Phoenix.
