Fox News anchor Chris Wallace has offered an official apology to Kelly Clarkson after saying she needs to "stay off the deep dish pizza for awhile."

Wallace’s jab came near the end of a conversation with radio host Mike Gallagher on April 3. The conversation turned from politics to pizza, and Wallace brought up Little Ceasars’ bacon-wrapped crust pizza. The two joked about fat-shaming, with the radio host telling Wallace not to fat-shame him. Then he asked if Wallace had seen Clarkson lately.

“Holy cow, did she blow up!” he says.

Wallace avoided putting his foot in his mouth at first, only commenting on her voice. They joked about a (presumably) overweight friend of Gallagher’s before Wallace interrupted to say, "She could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while."

Clarkson’s fans were not amused. The comment quickly went viral. Fox News host Greta Van Susteren called for Wallace to apologize, and he did on Sunday afternoon.

"I sincerely apologize to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment," Wallace told Us Weekly. "I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her."

Clarkson doesn’t seem to be personally bothered by a series of personal attacks, although she’s concerned about the message the comments send to fans.

“I’ve just never cared what people think,” she told Ellen on Friday. “It’s more if I’m happy and I’m confident and feeling good, that’s always been my thing. And more so now, since having a family —  I don’t seek out any other acceptance."

What does bother her is when fans worry about their own bodies after hearing others criticize Clarkson. “It’s like, you just are who you are. We are who we are — whatever size," the star insists. "It doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever.”

The singer admits her commitment to exercise comes and goes. “Sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t and I’m like, ‘I’d rather have wine.’”

The singer gave birth to daughter River Rose in June 2014.
