Over the weekend I checked into my facebook account and got some horrible news. One of my favorite guitarists Ronnie Montrose passed away on Saturday from prostate cancer at age 64. I was a huge fan of Ronnie's since the mid 1970's. Over the years, I had seen him many times in concert but my favorite show was one that he played at the Century Theatre in downtown Buffalo. The concert took place in March of 1978 and I remember it vividly because I drove my GTO to the show. The headliner was Journey, Ronnie Montrose had the middle slot and opening the show was a new quartet out of Los Angeles called Van Halen. This was also Van Halen's first Buffalo appearance. All three acts were incredible but my favorite that night was Ronnie Montrose. Ronnie was an outstanding guitarist and an incredible showman. He will be sadly missed by many. At the time of his death, he was planning a major U.S. tour with many dates already booked. And a reminder to all men 50 and over, please see your doctor and get your prostate checked. Prostate cancer is very curable if caught early enough.
