It’s one thing to play the guitar well. It’s another thing entirely to play the guitar well after almost cutting off your thumb. That’s exactly what Luke Bryan did as he helped his pal Dierks Bentley raise a record amount at the 8th annual Miles and Music for Kids benefit on Nov. 3, sporting a heavily bandaged thumb.

Bryan played an acoustic set at the charity event, telling fans in Music City, “Oh yes, downtown Nashville, it’s good to be playing a little music on a Sunday evening.” He also explained his bandaged finger, which unfortunately was the result of the star trying out his culinary skills making ribs.

“I was making some ribs and I almost cut my thumb off,” Bryan shares. “It’s fun doing this with stitches … you always want to cut your thumb off on CMA week.”

The 2013 Dierks Bentley Miles and Music event was a smashing success. Bentley led more than 1,000 motorcyclists on a 40-mile ride from Harley-Davidson of Columbia to Riverfront Park in Nashville to kick off the show, which benefited the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

The show was an all-star event, with a strong lineup including Jake OwenEaston Corbin, Bryan, Brett Eldredge and the ‘I Hold On’ singer himself.

“This is crazy to have this many people come out and support this cause,” Bentley remarked. “I think this might be the most people and tonight, we might make the most money.”

The estimated number of country music fans in the crowd was around 10,000 — the biggest audience ever — and with their help, Bentley did indeed set a record amount of donations with an astounding $307,000 going to the cause.

Naturally, the 2013 Taste of Country Music Festival headliner was incredibly moved by the display of generosity. “It’s not me, we broke the record,” he told fans. “God bless you guys. Thank you so much.”
