Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to commemorate the Union Soldiers killed in the war and was originally known as Decoration Day until 1882. In 1968 Congress moved four national holidays to Mondays in order to create convenient three day weekends. This is not the reason for Memorial Day, it is not for an extra day off of work or school, it is a day of remembrance. This is a day when all schools should be in session and students should be learning the history of Memorial Day and why it is celebrated.

We have come to celebrate the extra day off, not recognize the freedoms that we have been given from our brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country. In a time where celebrities and athletes are hailed as heroes, many have forgotten who the true American Heroes are. They are not the ones we see on TV and stage, they are not the ones in a baseball, basketball and football uniforms, they are the ones in a uniform with their last name on their chest and an American flag on their sleeve.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy your weekend, but as you crack another beer and toss a burger on the grill, just take a moment to remember the people who have given us the freedom we enjoy so much.
