Amherst Police say it was during a random, routine inspection that a working meth lab was found in a storm sewer under the parking lot of the Walmart on Sheridan Drive at North Bailey on Monday afternoon.  Area fire companies and State Police responded to the scene and determined it wasn't simply supplies that had been disposed of there, but actually was an active, working meth lab.

Found in the sewer was spray paint, various chemicals and what police said was a liquid they believe was methamphetamine, but they determined that the danger to customers and neighboring homes and businesses was minimal.  The Walmart store remained open the entire time.

Police say they'll be going thru surveillance video to determine who might have been able to gain access to the sewer, but likely it came from an overflow retention pond that's some distance from the store.  Because of the exceptionally dry summer there's no water in that pond.
