Being married isn’t always easy — and things can definitely get complicated when the couple works in the same industry. That’s the case with country superstars Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, who have both won many awards and have a slew of No. 1 singles to their name. In a recent sit-down with Parade.com, the outspoken singer admits she and her hubby compete from time to time, but it’s all in good fun.

“We definitely have friendly competition,” Lambert told Parade.com about going up against Shelton for the Video of the Year Award at the CMTs next week (June 6). “But we’re just lucky that we get to celebrate together. We are so happy for each other because both of our careers are going so well.”

The ‘Gunpowder and Lead’ hitmaker is known for being tough, talented and very open about her opinions. And right now, female powerhouse singers like Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift are doing more than their fair share of the work to bring new fans to country music.

“Right now it seems like the girls are drawing more attention to country music. The tides are turning a bit. We are popular music now,” Lambert says. “Every other genre is starting to come over to our genre now because it’s the cool one! I think the females are leading that, and I have to give a lot of that credit to Taylor Swift for having crossover fans come our way.”

Of course, being a strong woman in the public eye comes with a lot of responsibility. The award-winning singer knows that every time she takes the stage, there are thousands of young female fans looking up to her.

“It’s absolutely important to me,” she says. “The girls who come to the show are really proud to be women and proud to be strong.”
