I know that many of the female WYRK listeners are choosing to carry a firearm for personal protection. I think it's a wonderful idea. Owning a handgun is not for everyone, but I am glad we live in a country where we are free to make that decision.

My wife Debbie has had her pistol permit for 24 years. Does she carry her gun everyday? No, but it's there if she needs it. Back when she got her permit, she was trying to decide which pistol to get. It can be overwhelming because there are so many choices: different sizes, calibers. styles, etc.

Debbie ended up choosing a Smith & Wesson model 60 which is a .38 caliber 5-shot revolver in a stainless steel finish. She is quite happy with this gun and so am I. It's small enough to conceal, but yet still packs a pretty good punch. (Ironically, my uncle Fred carried the same type of gun as his back-up when he was with the Erie County Sheriff's Department). Our family owns several Smith & Wesson revolvers and we are quite satisfied with them.

One last point I want to pass on to you. It's also a great idea to purchase American made firearms. I try to buy American made guns whenever possible. My recent purchases include guns made by Del-Ton, CVA and Ruger.
