It’s time once again for our Hometown Hero, brought to you by Batavia Downs Gaming with help from our friends at WNY Heroes who help us with our nominations every week.  This Week’s Hometown Hero is orignally from Ann Arbor, MI.  It's United States Navy Lt. Michael Brown!

LT Brown reported to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 25 (NMCB-25) as Det 2625 OIC in December 2013. A native of Ann Arbor, MI., he was commissioned as a Reserve Officer in the Civil Engineer Corps through the Direct Commission Officer Program in September 2010.

In July 1992, Mr. Brown enlisted in the Navy as a Machininsts’ Mate in the Naval Nuclear Power Program. After graduation from Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL, he attended Naval Nuclear Power Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY. Upon completion of nuclear power training in 1994, Mr. Brown was selected to be a temporary crew member aboard the deep-diving research & recovery submarine NR-1, home ported in Groton, CT. He completed a nuclear propulsion plant emergency welder course in Submarine School, Groton, CT and was selected in 1995 to be a Plankowner in the construction and commissioning of the last Ohio-Class Trident submarine built, USS Louisiana (SSBN-743). While the USS Louisiana was in her precommissioning phase, Mr. Brown rode with the USS Pennsylvania (SSBN-735) for one patrol where he earned his enlisted submarine warfare device and submarine deterrent patrol pin. Mr. Brown was the Publications Petty Officer and Damage Control Petty Officer on USS Louisiana, and qualified in all engineering watch stations up through Engine Room Supervisor (ERS) and Engineering Watch Supervisor (EWS).  In July 1998 he fulfilled his enlistment obligations and was Honorably discharged from active duty. Mr. Brown then joined the Naval Reserve in August 1998. He was affiliated with Fleet Training Group (FTG) Mayport (98-02), Afloat Training Group (ATG) Mayport (02-04), Supreme Allied Command Transformation (SACT) Buffalo, NY (04-05), SACT Battle Creek, MI (05 – 06), Operational Support Unit in Battle Creek, MI (06-07) and PHIB CB-2, Det 205 (07-10). Throughout his Reserve duty assignments, Mr. Brown held varying positions of increasing responsibility up to and including ALPO. In September 2010, he received a direct commission as an Ensign in the Civil Engineer Corps and reported to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26 in Selfridge, MI. At NMCB-26, he initially held the position of Assistant Ops Officer. He then moved to Detachment Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Det 1226, a 55-member unit in Toledo, OH from October 2011 through October 2012. LT Brown was then assigned to the position of Detachment OIC of Det 0526, a 139-member unit in Selfridge, MI. In April 2013, he was assigned to the position of NMCB-26 Communications Officer, which he served until release of billets from NMCB-26 in preparation for Battalion decommissioning. In December 2013 LT Brown was assigned to NMCB-25 where he initially held the position of OIC for Detroit Detachment 2625. In January 2015 Mr. Brown was promoted to the position of Battalion Assistant Administrative Officer (S1A), in addition to Battalion Public Affairs Officer (PAO). In April 2015 Mr. Brown also took over the role of Geographic Company Commander in addition to his current S1A and PAO duties.

LT Brown is qualified in Submarine Warfare. His personal decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal (w/ 2 gold stars).

 

LT Brown’s professional education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the State University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo).  Brown is currently working towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Eastern Michigan University. He is currently a Senior Account Manager for the Dresser-Rand Company, headquartered out of Houston, TX.
