An all-weather carousel for Canalside is getting closer to reality.  $1.2 million dollars in funding from New York State last week is moving the project ever closer and it all begins with a Herschell-Spillman carousel built in North Tonawanda in 1924. The one-of-a-kind carousel was being held in storage in Ohio since 1954 with the owners waiting all this time for just the right project and this was it.  It will take about 18 months to restore it. The total cost of the attraction is an estimated $2.4 million using a combination of private and public funding.  When the carousel makes its debut it'll be one of only 10 of its kind in the country.

The Santa Cruz, California boardwalk has a similar enclosed carousel, but what makes it even more special is that it includes a Wurlitzer organ, also made in North Tonawanda.  Wouldn't it be appropriate to include a Wurlitzer organ as part of the new Buffalo Canalside carousel?
