Western New York's network of interconnected bike and walking trails continues to grow.  City of Tonawanda officials have announced a $2-million project that will extend the Rails to Trails pathway just under a mile to connect it with the Erie Canalway Trail and the Shoreline Trail.

Currently the Rails to Trails pathway follows an abandoned railroad right of way from the LaSalle Metro Station on Main Street, across Kenmore Avenue, Sheridan Drive, Colvin Blvd. and Brighton Road before ending at the corner of Young and State Streets in the City of Tonawanda, a distance of 4.8 miles.

The new extension will continue to follow the railroad right of way across Young Street and across Ellicott Creek to Fillmore Avenue, then follow Fillmore Avenue to East Niagara Street where it will end at the Erie Canalway Trail.

Work on the extension is expected to begin this spring.
