I came across a letter in the Buffalo News that caught my attention.  It was from a woman who was upset that a roadside memorial to her son had been removed by the Town of Cheektowaga because it was illegal.

It seems to be a growing trend to place crosses, candles, flowers and other mementos at the spot where a loved one died.  But for how long?  A few days?  A few weeks?  Forever?  Don't we already have appropriate places to remember a loved one?  It's called a cemetery.

Isn't it a better idea to remember someone for what they did and where they lived in life rather than how and where they died?  Be honest - if someone happened to be killed on the street in front of your house would you want a memorial placed on your property?  Maybe for a few days....but for the rest of time?

When someone passes away in a hospital are we permitted to place a memorial outside the room in which they died?  Of course not.  So why do so many people think roadside memorials are appropriate?  In many ways they're distracting to drivers who come across them.

We've all lost loved ones and my heart goes out to the family of this young man who died a tragic death.  For them and so many others, I wish they could find solace in a more suitable way to remember a family member or friend.
