I've been following this Buffalo Sabres team since its inception in 1970 and I can say without a doubt this is the lowest point in franchise history.  They've already fired the long-time coach and there's been no noticeable change in the team's performance.  Saturday night at First Niagara Center the boos were mixed with calls to fire the general manager.  You can fire the entire front office and the entire support staff and it still wouldn't make a difference.  This team is bad and its the players. In the past week the Sabres went up against two of the worst teams in the league and the Sabres proved they were worser.  I know that's not a word, but it's the truth.  What an incredible nosedive for a team that has much higher expectations.  In Saturday's 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders the Sabres continued to make the same mistakes that lead to goals against. It's been the same story since the start of the season.

With this team the tiniest mistakes lead to goals against.  They actually started out playing a good defensive game, but a missed assignment here and a turnover there and suddenly the Sabres are behind 2-0 and just couldn't catch up.

This team is easily rattled.  After they fall behind they start playing differently, running around chasing the other team, making poor passes, making poor decisions in their own zone and failing to play as a team.  For some reason it seems the only team they play well against is the the Boston Bruins.  And that's odd because the Bruins are one of the class teams in the league.

It seems that too many of the players on this team came into the season out of shape.  Maybe they thought they wouldn't be playing at all this season and just didn't bother getting themselves ready, but it really shows late in games when they just seem to be out of gas.

With a shortened season I think it's already gone for this year.  They're so far out of a playoff spot they likely won't ever catch up.  It means they could be a seller at the trade deadline and if General Manger Darcy Regier is smart he'll make some moves to bring in some new talent because this group continues to prove they can't get it done.
