It’s time now for the Hometown Hero brought to you by Batavia Downs Gaming. Thanks once again to Western New York Heroes for providing the info on this week’s hero. This week's Hometown Hero is Sergeant First Class John Beyer!

His nomination reads:

“SFC John F. Beyer serves his country as a hometown hero both as a member of our Armed Forces and as a member of our local police force.  SFC Beyer attended Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA in 1999.  Following Basic Training, SFC Beyer served two years at Ft. Drum, NY as a Fueler.  He was then assigned to Soul, Korea (K-16) as a member of the Honor Guard.  Next, SFC Beyer spent 22 months as a member of the Tango Security Forces.  SFC Beyer then received an Honorable discharge from active duty.  SFC Beyer served a brief enlistment in the Aviation field of the Texas National Guard before moving back to WNY.

 

Upon returning to WNY, SFC Beyer served as a member of the 152nd ENGS in the NY National Guard.  He then switched to the USAR, serving as a member of the 277th Fueling Unit on the Niagara Falls Air Base.  On October 30, 2005, SFC Beyer was deployed to Boca, Iraq where he worked convoy operations between Ali Al Salem Air Base in Airfjan, Kuwait and Boca, Iraq.  SFC Beyer was deployed until November 2006.  SFC Beyer currently serves as a member of the 1/390 Engineer Battalion as a Combat Engineer Senior Drill Sergeant.  SFC travels to Fort Leonard Wood in the summers to augment the active component as they negotiate the summer surge.

 

Following his return from Iraq in 2006, SFC Beyer started working as a Police Officer, first with the DOD Police on the Niagara Falls Air Base and then with the US Customs and Border Protection.  In 2008, SFC Beyer became a Patrol Officer with the Buffalo Police.

 

SFC Beyer resides in WNY with his wife Amber Beyer, who is also is a Buffalo Police Officer and fellow combat Veteran.  Amber was deployed with the 408th PSD to Al Asad, Iraq from 2005-2006 as a Causality Liaison.  John and Amber Beyer were married in May 2007 and have two beautiful daughters - Mariah (4) And Bailey (3).

Thanks goes out once again for another WNY soldier who has fought to keep our country free. We are honored to name Sergeant First Class John Beyer our Hometown Hero of the week.
