It was one of the most star-studded events in Nashville, and it was all for a worthwhile cause. Sheryl Crow and Jana Kramer, along with rapper 50 Cent, joined forces at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, in partnership with Feeding America, on Tuesday (Sept. 9) to participate in the first-ever volunteer packing event, helping families in need across the state.

Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, RaeLynn, Diamond Rio's Gene Johnson and professional figure skater Scott Hamilton also lent a hand. The celebrities were given a tour of the facility and then set to work at various duties, including bagging fruits and vegetables.

Crow, who has been a part of the organization for 11 years and now sits on the Feeding America Entertainment Council, feels strongly about supporting the cause.

"There are people who are underemployed or in between jobs, and this is sustaining them. That emotional experience for me made me want to continue to be a part of this," she tells Country Weekly. “I think one of the things that’s most unfathomable to most kids who grow up having a meal every morning, every noon and every evening is that’s not a God-given right. People need to get out and volunteer and contribute money, volunteer to stuff the boxes and really show up.”

RaeLynn adds, “I grew up serving at my local food bank and my church, and hunger matters. It’s really cool to come to a place like this and see how passionate people are about this. It doesn’t take long. Two hours of your day to volunteer is nothing. It’s really important.”

“A lot of people don’t realize that a mile down the road, someone is looking for their next meal, and it’s not out of the States, it’s literally next door,” Kramer notes. “It’s in your state, it’s in your hometown.”

In your hometown, indeed. Nearly 49 million Americans, or one in six, are at risk for hunger, with the number dropping to one in five for children. To find out how you can help, click here.
