Bananas, vanilla, green apples and peppermint. New ice cream flavor? No – they all have something in common though. They’re all considered neutral smells and according to a study by the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago– they can all help you lose weight. How? Whenever you get the urge to eat, or feel hungry, just sniff one of those items.

That’s what more than 3-thousand overweight people did and it worked. They lost an average of five pounds a month over a six month period. Another study found that sweet smells like chocolate have the opposite effect. They trigger hunger, leading to overeating.

The theory is that the neutral smells suppress your appetite because they work on the part of the brain that tells the body when it’s full. So next time you get the urge to snack during the day.....try sniffing a banana. You haven’t seen too many fat monkeys have you?
