Kevin Harvick passed Carl Edwards heading into the final lap and then held on to win the AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix on Sunday. Edwards was in command until he ran out of fuel with two laps remaining.

Chase leader Jimmie Johnson finished third and extended his points lead to 28 over second-place Matt Kenseth, who finished a distant 23rd. Kenseth entered the race just seven points behind Johnson, but his difficult day at Phoenix left him needing a miracle to win the championship in next week's season finale in Florida.

Kasey Kahne finished second, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in fourth and Kurt Busch placing fifth. Edwards sputtered into 21st place.

The final race of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season is next Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
