When Jessica looks at her 2-year-old daughter, she can't help but flash back to when she was that age. It's a bittersweet memory — the Evansville, Ind. native started her treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at age two, and she has the scars to prove it.

“I can’t imagine what my mom and dad went through having to watch their child suffer through something like that,” Jessica tells WKDQ-FM in Evansville, Ind (for privacy reasons, her last name is being withheld). The station is one of 16 Townsquare Media stations participating in a radiothon this week. Last year Taste of Country joined them to raise over $1 million.

“I look at her and I think I was just that age when I was diagnosed, and I can’t imagine having to deal with that with her.”

Fortunately she's acutely aware of St. Jude, and all the great things that happen with the help of generous contributors. Jessica doesn't remember much from her experience, aside from the chemotherapy. Those memories are vivid, but looking back she doesn't recall the pain. She thinks about how much comfort her parents must have had knowing she was in good hands. Jessica's mother was a nurse, so she was the first to feel the tumor. At the doctor's office she asked "What would you do?" and her pediatrician told her about St. Jude.

“I see all the blessings that I’ve been given. All the blessings and all the hope that places like St. Jude give to people," she says as Ruth blows kisses to the radio deejays interviewing her mother. "And I’m just so grateful.”

Jessica does have a scar on her stomach from the surgery to remove the tumor. She's self-conscious about it, “But at the same time I think, ‘What a blessing that is!’”

The daily operating cost at St. Jude is nearly $2 million, and most of the funding comes from private donors like you. Become a Partner in Hope by clicking the button below. You'll be ensuring the blessings keep coming for people like Jessica, and all the little Ruths in this world.
