On this day in 1957, the Wham-O toy company began production of what we know today as the Frisbee. Within 20 years they had sold 100-million.

It’s a toy based on a pie pan. And it’s a story that began with the Frisbie Pie Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut in the late 1800’s.

What Do You Know About the Frisbee?

At least 60 companies produce what many of us just call the Frisbee but only one company – Mattel Toys has the right to use the name.  They bought the rights from Wham-O in 1994. 

The Frisbee story goes all the way back to the 1800’s when college students in the area of Bridgeport, Connecticut used pie tins made by the Frisbie Pie Company to throw at each other, yelling "Frisbie!" as they let go.
