There was a time when air travel was a very special occasion. I remember our family taking a California vacation when I was a kid and all of us got dressed up to get on the plane. My father and I both wore a jacket and tie. My mom and sisters wore dresses. That's the way it was. Back then passengers were actually served meals during their flights. We got both breakfast and lunch heading out to California - and it was part of the price of the ticket. There were no hassles at security having to nearly strip to get to the gate. No charges for baggage. It was a different time and I miss it.

With what happened last month in Japan we now have the modern perspective of what a massive earthquake can do. But this is one that happened more than one hundred years ago. It was while most of the city was still asleep. At close to 8.0 on the Richter scale, the great San Francisco earthquake shook the city awake at 5:13 a.m. and immediately killed hundreds of people as it toppled homes and buildings. Aftershocks caused more destruction while fires broke out all over the city. And because broken water mains prevented firefighters from battling the fires some areas of the city became infernos.
