Correcting Brett’s Post About The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier

In May of 2012, I had written a post here at WYRK.com about some interesting facts about the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier. I had used a website called freerepublic.com for some of the facts.

However, yesterday I received an email from John Shields who actually served as a Sentinel at the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier from ’00 to ’02. He explained that some of the statements made in the post were incorrect and asked if he could help me to clear some of them up.

Not Even Hurricane Sandy Affects Guard Duty at Tomb of Unknown Soldier

Regardless of the weather, heat, cold, rain, snow or even hurricane, members of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard” have guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since April 6th, 1948. Not even Hurricane Sandy changes that, or any hurricane for that matter.

Interesting Facts About The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier

There is a monument at Arlington National Cemetary dedicated to the Unknown Soldier.  It is for the soliders whose remains were not able to be identified.  They are still soliders who fought for our freedom and guarding their tomb is one of the highest honors. The guardians are called Sentinels and when they are chosen to serve, their duty lasts for the rest of their lives.
