When I was a kid, summertime meant being out of school, ice cream, freeze pops and all kinds of fun stuff. Now I get to enjoy those things with my own kids, but mostly it means just having to go to work when it's warm out.

So today I decided to reminisce and come up with the 15 things I miss the most about being a kid in the summer.

  • 1

    Lemonade Stands

Honestly, we all thought we were going to become millionaires, but what ended up happening is that we spent about 5 bucks on lemonade and drank 90 percent of it.

  • 2

    Ice Cream

We would anxiously await the Schwan's truck in our front yard to get our push-ups and eclair bars. Then we would dig into whatever tub of ice cream we had in the freezer after dinner.

  • 3

Being In The Pool ALL DAY!

We would get up and put our swim trunks on right away, and we didn't take them off until it was time to go to bed.

  • 4

    Freeze Pops

Totally different from the ice cream because these things were always in the freezer. There was no waiting for these...unless you count the time that it took to open them so that you weren't eating plastic the whole time.

  • 5

    The Drive-In

We would load up the car and head over to the drive-in with a boatload of snacks (I know...we weren't supposed to bring them in) and watch movies until waaaaayyyy late!

  • 6

    Riding Bikes

These were our main mode of transportation. They were fun, and we would put stickers on them to look cool. Now they've become a main source of exercise. And exercise doesn't even sound as fun as an adult.

  • 7

    Blackberries

OK, this one might seem kind of strange, but around our house, there were blackberry bushes everywhere. Obviously the time that they're in season is summer, and we would eat them whenever we found them. My neighbor's mom would promise us that if we picked enough of them, she would make us a pie. We never picked enough of them. That was hard to do while you were eating so many!

    Having Friends Over

One of the cool things about being a kid is when you get to have a friend sleep over at your house. Those times are sparse during the school year. But in the summertime, you could have a friend over any day of the week (as long as your parents said you could).

  • 9

    The Food

Summertime food just tastes better. I'm a sucker for stuff like macaroni salad and chicken barbeque. It goes really nice with a cold glass of lemonade or iced tea on a hot day.

  • 10

    Warm Weather

Maybe it's because I was a kid, but when I remember summer days being perfect. There was sunshine to warm us when we got out of the pool, and there was a breeze to keep us cool when we were in the sun.

  • 11

    Sunsets

They happen later in the summer, and I think you can enjoy them even more that way.

  • 12

    The Trampoline

We had a square-shaped trampoline as a kid. This thing had the rustiest springs on it that would often break as we were jumping. It was very dangerous. But it was incredibly fun.

  • 13

    Going Places On Vacation

We were very lucky as kids. We got to really see our country on our vacations. We were able to go to Disney, the beach in North Carolina, visit friends and family in the Midwest...and even do some things that I didn't enjoy at the time, like see historical sights. Sure, some of them were pretty boring for a kid, but it was the experience that I can appreciate now that I'm an adult.

  • 14

    Camping Out

We didn't often camp too far from home. Heck, most of the time it was just a tent in the backyard! But we were sleeping in a tent. Essentially that meant no bed time.  And there's no better feeling than waking up to a sunny morning after a night camping.

    Ghost In The Graveyard

This is really just hide and seek in the dark. It was a game we would play when all of our cousins and friends were over, and it was awesome.
