This week, we honor another WNY Native who has paid the ultimate sacrifice as a soldier for our country. Our Hometown Hero is 21-year-old Batavia Native US Army Sgt. Shaina Schmigel.

Military service is a dangerous job. Even during peaceful drills, service members lives are at risk. That was the case for Sgt. Schmigel, as she lost her life during a paratrooper exercise with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on May 30.

Sgt. Schmigel was a former Medina High School student who loved her life as a paratrooper. She had already served one tour in Iraq. Her funeral took place on Wednesday in Corfu with full honors.

This week our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family as we honor her as our Hometown Hero. On behalf of everyone here at WYRK, we just want to say thank you for your service.

Remember, if you would like to nominate someone who is currently serving our country or has served in the past, simply click the button below. We will honor a new Hometown Hero each week, and if their name is picked, not only do we mention them on the air but we also dedicate the first song on Noon Tunes to them.

Thank you once again to Army Sgt. Shaina Schmigel, this week’s Hometown Hero!
