Congratulations to this week's hometown heroes: The Saint Johnsburg Volunteer Fire Company. Here is their story:

Our department was founded in 1926 by a group of concerned citizens that felt there was not enough adequate fire protection in the Town of Wheatfield, NY. We are one of five fire companies that proudly serve our area. The other fire companies are: Adams, Bergholz, Frontier, and Shawnee. Together, we provide the residents of our area with 100% volunteer fire and EMS protection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We operate out of one centrally located station within our service area, and are less than a mile from Westby's Bar (the old JT Wheatfields). We are proud to have over 60 active responders within our ranks, and have taken in over 14 new applicants within the last year alone!

To serve our residents, we operate: an Engine, an Aerial Ladder, a Heavy Rescue, a light rescue/EMS vehicle and a utility van.

Each week our department hosts training drills to keep our skills sharp for our residents. Our weekly drills include: EMS, Hazmat Operations, live fire, auto extrication, search and rescue, mayday operations and communications; just to name a few topics. Our members take training very seriously, and continuously work to improve their skills to be better prepared for our residents in their time of need!

In addition to the calls that our responders handle all hours of the day and night, the required training and meetings; our responders are also very dedicated by coming out to weekly fundraisers to help supplement the funds our town residents give us in the form of our fire tax. We are very proud to say that we are a 100% volunteer, community-based organization that truly cares about our residents and their needs.

If your volunteer fire company would like to be considered for our weekly spotlight, please email your photo and fire company bio to:  johnlamond@wyrk.com

God Bless all firefighters everywhere!
